While June’s status as Gay Pride Month is becoming better known and more widely accepted, many in Wayne County and other parts of Ohio are still unsure of how to participate. Many are unsure what they are celebrating. Gay Pride Month actually began to honor the 1969 Stonewall uprising in Greenwich Village, which served as a catalyst for the gay rights movement. Today, commemorations are observed throughout the country during the entire month of June.
What Happens During Gay Pride Month?
Throughout the month of June, members of the LGBTQ community gather with friends and supporters to celebrate how far the community has come in gaining equal rights, while also recognizing the continued need to fight for equal treatment. Parades and other events often take on a mix of celebration and activism.
All are welcome to participate — these events are open to members of the LGBTQ community as well as aspiring allies.
