Human Rights Day 2018

Every year Human Rights Day is observed across the world in order to commemorate the drafting of the Universal Document of Human Rights. This is one of the most translated documents in the world and set out to define fundamental human rights that deserve universal protection.

Human Rights Day is acknowledged on December 10th every year.

This was the day when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Document of Human Rights in 1948. A total of 48 nations approved the human rights document for future generations.

The document declaring our shared human rights followed the brutally destructive Second World War, which also led to the formation of the United Nations itself. The United Nations included protecting human rights for all peoples across the globe as its fundamental mission by affirming the dignity and worth of the human person.

The organization is also committed to promoting freedom for all people.

The Universal Document of Human Rights includes 30 articles which lay out the common standards for each and every person’s basic human rights. It boldly proclaims in its first article that "all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.” It goes on to describe that each person has a right to life, liberty, and security; should be free from discrimination, slavery, torture, or other cruel behavior.

The human rights we all enjoy, and which are often taken for granted, are acknowledged every year on Human Rights Day.
