Finding Hope and Support on the Road to Recovery: Recovery Housing at OneEighty

Nonya Wenger, Residential Peer Recovery Manager

Nonya Wenger isn’t your average manager. As the Residential Peer Recovery Manager at OneEighty, Nonya brings a unique blend of enthusiasm, experience, and empathy to her role. Her passion for helping individuals on their recovery journey is evident, and her role at OneEighty reflects the organization’s commitment to holistic recovery.

Under Nonya’s guidance, OneEighty’s Housing and Peer Support Services plays a crucial role in providing ongoing support and integration for individuals seeking long-term recovery solutions. “Watching folks succeed in recovery housing where they failed before or weren’t able to sustain their recovery is just amazing to see because for every person that struggles and maybe doesn’t get it right, we’ve got others who do, and they just soar – and it’s just amazing to see. And being able to help them facilitate growth in their recovery, there’s nothing better than knowing that you helped somebody change their life,” beamed Nonya when talking about her new role at OneEighty.

“I have such a love and respect for this agency and what it does, and the opportunity to grow more is always the goal. Right? What else can I do? What else can I learn? How else can I be of service? And I love getting the opportunity to bring my years of experience with the agency and provide and bring that length of knowledge to some of the folks here that are maybe just coming in and don’t understand the breadth and the depth of the things that OneEighty does,” explains Nonya. OneEighty’s Recovery Housing Program provides a vital bridge between residential treatment and independent living. It offers a safe, supportive environment where individuals can continue building a strong foundation for their recovery.

Understanding Recovery Housing: A Stepping Stone to Success

Recovery housing plays a crucial role in long-term recovery. OneEighty manages 12 recovery facilities across Wooster and Millersburg, Ohio, catering to both men and women. These facilities fall into two categories: transitional housing and level-one independent living recovery houses. Transitional housing offers a structured environment with additional support services, while level-one independent living allows for more autonomy. All houses are currently certified with Ohio Recovery Housing.

OneEighty’s Recovery Housing Program goes beyond simply providing a roof over one’s head. It fosters a sense of community and belonging. Residents can connect with peers who understand the challenges and triumphs of recovery. This supportive environment allows them to practice the skills they learned in treatment and gradually reintegrate into society. And, as the communities we support change, we make adjustments to accommodate what the biggest need is at the time.

OneEighty’s Recovery Housing Program is particularly helpful for individuals striving to reunite with their families. Nonya shares, “We have several folks right now that are working on getting their kids back, and it’s so nice to be able to say to them, ‘Absolutely. What’s next? Let us know what you need.’ We’ll make sure that we’ve got, you know, a trundle bed for your daughter when she gets here. We’ll make sure that we are able to move you in to one of the houses that has a bigger room so that you can share that space with your son. We’re able to do that for folks. And I think that’s really amazing.”

Taking that First Step: Qualifying for Recovery Housing at OneEighty

OneEighty’s Recovery Housing Program offers a lifeline to those committed to long-term recovery. But how does one qualify for this program? Individuals seeking transitional housing typically need to have been clean from substances for a minimum of 60 days. They must also be actively engaged in recovery efforts, such as attending support groups and therapy sessions. Additionally, they must demonstrate a willingness to follow the program’s guidelines.

The criteria for level-one independent living recovery housing is similar but with a focus on greater independence. There is no set time limit for residing in OneEighty’s Recovery Housing Program. The ultimate goal is to empower individuals to achieve self-sufficiency and live fulfilling lives in recovery.

Here’s a breakdown of the eligibility requirements for each:

Transitional Housing:

  • Minimum 60 days substance-free: This demonstrates a commitment to initial recovery.
  • Engaged in recovery activities: Regular participation in groups, counseling, or other recovery programs shows a proactive approach to maintaining sobriety.
  • Willingness to follow program guidelines: Transitional housing offers a structured environment, and adhering to the established rules is crucial for success.

Level-One Independent Living Recovery Houses:

  • Minimum 6 months substance-free: This demonstrates a commitment to ongoing recovery.
  • Engaged in recovery activities: Regular participation in groups, counseling, or other recovery programs shows a proactive approach to maintaining sobriety.
  • Willingness to follow program guidelines: Since Recovery Housing is more independent than Transitional Housing it is very important residents follow all guidelines, especially since the house is shared with other folks in recovery.
  • Verified source of income: Financial stability is essential for long-term recovery, and having a source of income allows residents to contribute to their stay and develop independent living skills.
