An Integrative Approach to Wellness at OneEighty

When it comes to healthcare, the integration of physical and behavioral health has emerged as a fundamental strategy for comprehensive wellness. At OneEighty, we recognize the significance of addressing these aspects of an individual’s wellbeing, and our continued developments in healthcare services exemplifies our commitment to this holistic approach. OneEighty CEO Bobbi Douglas explained why it’s important that treatment plans are, integrative and not siloed: “At OneEighty, we recognize that people with behavioral health disorders can also have significant physical repercussions. These are some of the common consequences for people with substance use disorder (SUD).”

Douglas asserted that the research for integrating primary care and behavioral health care into SUD treatment demonstrates dramatically improved outcomes. “For the person to have a better quality of life, and good overall health, all these issues need to be addressed. When you can treat clients for these health concerns in the same setting, with people they trust, it makes it much easier for them to get the care they need,” Douglas added.

Innovations in Healthcare Services at OneEighty

Primary Care and Reproductive Care

Among our latest initiatives are the introduction of primary care and reproductive care services. These offerings address the needs of clients who may have been neglecting their physical health due to various barriers. “We have a lot of patients who come in for Medically Assisted Treatment (MAT) or mental health services who aren’t taking care of their physical health because it’s inconvenient,” OneEighty’s Medical Director, Nicole Labor, explained.

OneEighty’s primary care services provide accessible and regular check-ups, screenings, and preventive measures for existing clients. Similarly, OneEighty’s reproductive care services empower clients to make informed decisions about their reproductive and sexual health – fostering a comprehensive approach to overall wellbeing. Reproductive health care and services are provided through a partnership with the Viola Startzman Clinic. Services include:

  • Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Testing & Treatment
  • Pregnancy Testing
  • 1st Trimester Pregnancy Care
  • Postpartum Care
  • Affordable Birth Control
  • Period Management
  • Menopause-Related Care
  • Breast and Cervical Cancer Screenings

Douglas also pointed out that there is a high rate of diabetes and heart disease among people with addiction, particularly alcoholism. “When clients begin to feel better, they’re much more likely to stay clean and sober,” she said.

Specialized Care for Pregnant Women

Pregnant women facing substance use disorders require specialized care. Through our partnership with the Akron Children’s Maternal Fetal Medicine at Summa, we ensure that pregnant individuals receive comprehensive support and treatment tailored to their unique needs. This collaborative approach underscores our commitment to holistic wellness.

Harm Reduction

Harm reduction has also become a core element of our services at OneEighty. Collaborating with the Wooster Community Hospital’s harm reduction team, we aim to educate the public about harm reduction strategies and provide essential resources. Our focus on Narcan distribution is an important way OneEighty is working to reduce harm and preventing opioid-related deaths. “However, harm reduction is not just about reducing harm until you can get them into treatment,” Dr. Labor asserted. “It’s about reducing harm for its own purpose.”

STI Treatment: Fostering Sexual Health and Education

Sexual health is an integral aspect of overall well-being. At OneEighty, we are committed to providing comprehensive STI treatment and education to our community through support from the Viola Startzman Clinic. Our services extend beyond medical care to include essential information and resources that empower individuals to make informed decisions about their sexual health. By offering regular screenings, appropriate treatment, and educational resources, we contribute to a healthier and more informed community.

HIV Testing, Education, and Early Intervention

Early detection is key when it comes to managing and preventing the spread of HIV. We prioritize HIV testing as a critical component of our integrated healthcare approach. Our comprehensive testing services aim to identify cases early, allowing for timely interventions and support. Beyond testing, OneEighty provides educational resources to raise awareness about HIV prevention and transmission. By equipping our community with knowledge, we empower people to take proactive steps towards safeguarding their health.

Hepatitis C Testing and Treatment

Hepatitis C is a serious viral infection that can have long-term health implications if left untreated. OneEighty is dedicated to providing accessible Hepatitis C education, testing, and treatment options.

A Closer Look at Medication-Assisted Treatment

While OneEighty offers various medications, such as Buprenorphine, Suboxone, Naltrexone, and Vivitrol, medication isn’t always the first step to treatment. Our collaborative approach with clinicians, counselors, and clients prioritizes engaging in therapy, skill-building, and addressing the root causes of addiction before considering medication.

The Broader Impact on Those We Serve

The developments in OneEighty’s integrative healthcare services have already had a profound impact on our ability to care for clients. “I just want to see people get well,” Douglas emphasized. “We see people that have dug themselves such big holes, they have a really hard time getting out. I see it financially: they’re in cars that have 25% interest rates because their credit is so bad. I see it with health care, where they’re just constantly suffering from the results of these secondary illnesses. Or, even as far as health care screenings: they haven’t had a PAP smear or a colonoscopy.”

Dr. Labor also sees benefits to the whole person approach. “By offering a range of services under one roof, we eliminate obstacles and provide seamless care. Our integrated approach acknowledges that wellness encompasses physical and behavioral health – providing a holistic foundation and individualized approach for each client’s overall wellbeing,” she explained. “We understand that the journey to wellness is multifaceted, and we are dedicated to providing a comprehensive range of services that works to address the diverse needs of our community. By integrating physical and behavioral healthcare, we empower individuals to achieve optimal wellness and lead healthier lives.”
