The Importance of Taking a Break from Ordinary

Sometimes all we need to improve a negative mindset is to take a break from ordinary. Taking a break, by definition, means to stop doing something for a short period of time. Why not apply this to doing the same thing day in and day out! This simple practice of taking a break can help us to regain clarity and a positive outlook.

Mix It Up!

Ironically, the many changes that have occurred in the past year have actually led to monotony for many. You can (and should) take a break from monotony! Find a small way to insert a little unexpected into your daily routine. Go for a walk, play a quick game, attend a mini-concert on YouTube, eat dinner outside, call someone you haven’t talked to in a while, challenge yourself to fold laundry one-handed – just do something out of the ordinary to change things up a bit. This can help you to relax and can actually improve your health and well-being.

Feed Your Brain

Just like your body needs physical activity in order to thrive, your brain needs cognitive activity to stay healthy. If your daily responsibilities involve lots of thinking, take a break and do something fun that will give your brain a rest. Do your responsibilities involve lots of physical activity, but little mind stimulation? Activate your brain by learning a new skill or picking up a hobby that you haven’t done for a while.

Change Your Surroundings

You can also recharge your batteries by changing your surroundings. Is an area you spend time in cluttered? Take a break by doing a ten-minute clean up. This will help to reduce stress and encourage positive thoughts. Rearrange a couple of pieces of furniture. Go outside for a few minutes and pay attention to the different sounds, sights, and smells. Take a different route home. Sit in a different chair than you usually do. There are countless ways to take a mini-vacation from ordinary to help improve your outlook.
