Many of the most important mental health services don’t take place in a counseling session. Rather, they come as a result of the daily care offered by caregivers. With this in mind, November is National Family Caregivers Month. Here’s what you should know about this important effort celebrating those who selflessly give of themselves to care for family members in need.

What is National Family Caregivers Month?

National Family Caregivers Month is celebrated each November. What started as a grassroots effort by the National Family Caregivers Association in 1994 became official with a Presidential Proclamation in 1997. This month is designed to raise awareness of and support for caregiver issues, as well as provide education to family caregivers.

With that in mind, the 2019 theme is #BeCareCurious, which has the goal of encouraging caregivers to learn more about their loved one’s goals and treatment options. With this knowledge, caregivers can better support loved ones in need.

How You Can Provide Support to Caregivers

A key goal of National Family Caregivers Month is to support and celebrate the unsung contributions of family caregivers. If you’re not a caregiver, you can still make a difference by supporting family, friends, or coworkers in this often challenging situation.

Small acts can make a big difference. Providing a homemade meal or helping with chores can ease the physical burden of caregiving. Inviting caregivers to outings and giving them an opportunity to take a break, or simply acting as a listening ear can help caregivers rest, deal with stress, and address their emotional needs.
